The Berlin Christmas market terrorist attack has completely changed the political situation in Germany. 12 dead and more than 40 wounded made one thing clear: Merkel must go! Two acts of resistance occurred in Berlin.
Wednesday evening at 6 pm a spontaneous vigil and demonstration was held in front of the Berlin Chancellery. More than 500 people participated in the demonstration organized by the Citizens' Initiative One Percent (Ein Prozent) and the Patriotic Party AfD. Philip Stein of the One Percent Initiative spoke eloquently.
His expressions of anger, grief, and impotence reflected the feelings of many Germans that evening, along with a general consensus that the blood of the victims is on Merkel’s hands. She brought these people in spite of warnings from political leaders and security agencies that there was no way to vet large numbers of migrants coming of the war zones of North Africa and the Middle East.
45 minutes later, Berlin-Mitte, the center of Berlin, was in uproar.
60 activists of the Identitarian movement and One Percenters blocked the entrance of the CDU party headquarters. The message of the young activists was clear: "Merkel must go!" was loudly roared by megaphone. Within a short time, a crowd of about 100 people gathered, encouraging the activists.
But the Identitarians did not stop at the blockade: posters with the face of the rape and murder victim Maria Ladenburger and the inscription "Victims of multicultural guilt" were hung on the glass front of the party center. The activists themselves unrolled banners with the inscriptions "Protect borders - Save lives" and "Terror has become normalized - stop multiculturalism and Islamization!".
Half an hour after the start of the action, the first units of the German police arrived. When they tried to end the demonstration, the Identitarians sat down for the face off. The supporters of the activists were expelled by the police.
The Identitarians stayed put. Not intimidated by the police, they encouraged them through megaphones to join the protest. German police are very patriotic.
Even as they do their jobs, certainly many police quietly cheer the boldness and creativity of organizations like the the Identitarians who stand up for Germany and Europe when it is so obvious their political leaders are letting them down.
